With the easing of Covid restrictions the British Mountaineering Council and British Mountain Medicine Society are again combining to offer a weekend of Mountain Medicine Workshops on the 11th and 12th June.

Led by experienced mountain medicine doctors and paramedics, the weekend will consist of a series of one hour workshops.
Subjects likely to be covered will include:

  • Assessment of the sick or injured patient in remote areas (Primary Survey).
  • Hypothermia
  • Frostbite and cold injuries
  • Hyperthermia and heat exhaustion
  • Enjoying the hills with co-existing medical conditions
  • High altitude illness
  • Use of a hyperbaric (“Gamow”) bag for altitude illness.
  • Medical kits for UK hill days or major expeditions.
  • Hand Injuries in rockclimbers
  • Nutrition in the hills
  • Endurance Events
  • Splinting and dressings

If there are more specialised topic you want to hear about we can normally find you an expert in our team. We can offer a more personal one to one ask the doctor session.

Workshops will run several times over the weekend for groups of 6-9 people and will be geared to the knowledge needs of the groups, who will be allocated on the day. We hope to see interested recreational climbers and hillwalkers, mountain leaders, instructors, guides and those planning trips abroad and in the UK.

This is a social as well as an educational event so have a chat to the experts over a beer and BMC BBQ on Saturday evening.

CPD points available from the BMGs, BAIML and the Mountain Training Association (MTA).

On Monday 13th June Hathersage will also be hosting a day dedicated to the role hill walking can play in maintaining good mental health. Through a series of short talks, workshops and a walk in the beautiful Peak District, we’ll hear about what’s going on in the UK today.
The day will end with a talk from the author Jake Tyler, who’ll describe how walking more than 3000 miles around the UK lifted him out of a life threatening episode of depression.
