Nepal Diploma in Mountain Medicine

  • Run by the Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal (MMSN), and also approved by UIAA/ICAR/ISMM
  • The first course ran in 2011, and now runs yearly in November-December.
  • Taught in the English language by a mix of Nepali, British, Swiss German and Austrian instructors.
  • Consists of 1 week in Kathmandu, followed by 3 weeks in the Annapurna A number of essays to be completed prior to the course, followed by a dissertation standard paper to be written following the course.
  • Available to international medical doctors and final year medical students.
  • Cost: $5750 (US) for international doctors + flights and insurance etc. All food, transport, accommodation and some kit is provided.

  • Designed and written by two of the authors of the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine. This book is used as its core text.
  • Taught by experienced holders of IDEWM & IDiMM, who have field experience and “have been there and done it”.
  • Consists of 4 week long residential modules for IDEWM (Glasgow, Cairngorms, Dartington, Morocco), 2 week long residential modules for IDiMM (Cairngorms, Alps), plus on-line learning modules.

    • Infectious diseases, Global Health, Research, Navigation, Mountains and Cold.
    • Emporiatrics, Tropical and Maritime, Thermal Injuries, Altitude and Desert

Extreme Medicine MSc

  • A collaboration between World Extreme Medicine and the University of Exeter.
  • First intake in 2016, now runs yearly.
  • Covers aspects of expedition medicine, pre-hospital medicine and humanitarian medical responses. Includes a focus on ethical, legal, professional and logistical challenges in a range of environments.
  • Time frame: Year 1: PGCert, Year 2: Diploma, Year 3: MSc.
    • PGCert consists of 3 short modules in Dorset, London and Dartmoor, covering core concepts, pre-hospital trauma, and human factors respectively. A number of masters-level assignments are completed during the year.
    • Diploma focuses on the Essentials of Humanitarian and Disaster Relief, plus two of mountain, jungle and polar residential modules.
    • MSc focuses on space medicine, and required the completion of a dissertation.
  • Cost: PGCert £8000, MSc £8300 for UK residents.

MSc in Remote and Global Healthcare

  • A Masters programme based at the University of Plymouth.
  • Aimed at all health care professionals aspiring to work in rural or remote environments, and wanting to gain insight into health care systems in low-middle income countries.
  • Masters may be completed as a full-time student in 12 months, or part time over three years. Intermediate awards include the PGCert and Diploma. Students are able to step off at any level of the course.
  • Four modules are completed within the first 2 years, then a dissertation and final module during the third year for students wishing to progress to the Masters stage.
  • The modules include:
    • Remote Practitioner (based in Dartmoor, focussing on expedition medicine)
    • Global Health
    • Remote and Global Placement Medicine
    • Project Design, Development and Knowledge Transfer
  • Students are also required to organise a remote/global health placement, usually a minimum of 3-4 weeks.
  • Cost: Part time £2640 per year/60 credits, £5370 for international students.
